Get involved — Chair & Secretary wanted

From September 2026

We’re looking for two people to help lead the PSA.

The Highgate Wood School PSA needs a new Chair and Secretary from September 2026. If you’re reasonably organised, enjoy working with people, and want to be part of something that genuinely makes a difference to school life, we’d love to hear from you.

These are rewarding roles — you’ll be working with a fun group of fellow parents, helping to build the community between families, staff and pupils, and raising money that goes directly back into the school. We’ve raised over £14,000 this year alone, funding everything from books and field trips to a new mixing desk for the Music department.

You won’t be thrown in at the deep end either. There’s a proper six-week handover from our current Chair and Secretary, and you’ll have the full PSA team behind you from day one.

What does the chair do?

The Chair gives the PSA its overall direction — but always as part of a team, never alone. In practice

  • Chairing meetings (roughly once per half-term)
  • Being the main point of contact between the PSA and school
  • Presenting at the annual AGM
  • Helping to shape the events programme for the year
  • Keeping an eye on how things are running

What does the Secretary do?

The Secretary is the organisational glue that keeps everything moving. This means:

  • Scheduling meetings and sharing agendas
  • Taking minutes and circulating them afterwards
  • Keeping track of actions
  • Maintaining the digital filing

Make it your own

The above is the minimum — but you’re free to shape the role around what you can offer. Past Chairs and Secretaries have done more; equally, our committee is growing and becoming more structured, so there’s much less pressure on any one person than there used to be. We now have dedicated leads for communications, events, volunteering, social media, the newsletter and more — so you won’t be doing everything yourself.

Just tell us what you can realistically commit to. We’ll work with that.

Support and handover

What the handover looks like

  • Six weeks from early September to mid-October 2026
  • Current Chair and Secretary will share documents, guidance and support throughout
  • You’ll step into a structure that’s been deliberately designed to be manageable

Time commitment

A few hours a month on average, a little more around key events. One formal meeting per half-term, which both Chair and Secretary attend.

Do I need experience?

No. We’re looking for:

  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • A collaborative mindset — someone who’s good at coordinating rather than trying to do everything themselves
  • An interest in the school community
  • Some sense of how voluntary committees work (the handover will fill in any gaps)

About the PSA

We run at least one event per term — quiz nights, auctions, Movie Night, our annual MADFest — and raise funds that go straight back into supporting students. We also organise a termly Staff Appreciation Tea and occasional uniform sales. This year we’ve funded books for Year 8, a field trip to Snowdonia, Crouchella refreshments, a Year 7 Halloween Disco and a new mixing desk for the Music department, among other things.

We’re in the middle of a positive shift towards a more structured, team-based way of working — every committee member has a clear role, events have dedicated leads, and the workload is genuinely shared. It’s a good moment to get involved.

Come and meet us

The easiest way to find out if this is for you is a low-key chat over a drink. We’re holding an informal pub social on Wednesday 2nd July at The Good Reader on Park Road, from 7.30pm. Come with questions, come out of curiosity, or just come for the company. Everyone is welcome — including parents of new Year 7 starters joining in 2026. (We’ll be there straight after the Year 7 parents’ information evening, so do stay on.)

Can’t make it but want to know more? Drop us a line or have a word with any current PSA committee member.

Highgate Wood School PSA — run by parents, for the whole school community.

Volunteer with the PSA

Join us is in making a difference at Highgate Wood School. We know that when parents and carers get involved, great things happen. It’s more than just showing up (although we really appreciate that too)— it’s about building connections, sharing ideas, and helping our whole school community thrive. Everyone involved in the Highgate Wood School PSA, including the committee is a volunteer, so we always need help, and we are hoping you will want to get involved.  The PSA would not work if we did not have parents willing to give up a little bit of their time to help us.

Volunteer at events

You can join our Volunteers List to receive requests for help at events.  Signing up to the volunteer list does not commit you to anything but does mean you are aware of what opportunities there are to support the PSA.   We’ll usually put out an appeal for volunteers for a specific event, via email and WhatsApp. Our key need is for MADFest – even half an hour of your time can be put to good use!

Volunteer on the committee

If you have more time and would like to become more involved, consider joining the Highgate Wood School PSA Committee.  We are interested in hearing new suggestions and ideas and are keen to welcome new Highgate Wood School PSA Committee members – it’s a great way to feel more involved in School life, and to make friends across year groups!
